AWE, second viewing.
May. 26th, 2007 06:02 pmI love this movie. It is coming close to being on a par with the first. It isn't there yet, and one of the reasons is that it still relies a little too much on the first for its wit. There were so many clever lines in the first movie and because they were original to it, they were enchanting. However, with a second viewing of this movie, the wit that is orginal to it is starting to assert itself. It is a wild ride from start to finish.
I love Elizabeth. I love that she is kick ass tough. I love the way she moves and handles a sword. I love that she is given brains and she knows how to use them. I love how she stands up to the men, "what makes you think I need protecting?" So many people have said this. I love that she is flawed and impetuous. She made a choice, several choices in DMC and she learned to live with the consequences. She tried to make ammends. I don't see her as a bitch, she can be soft but she knows when to say that the dog has died, as a matter of speaking. Her conversation with James when they meet was, I think, the right words at the right time. In my opinion, it was what woke him up.
And speaking of James, I think KJ hit the nail on the head when she talked about why she doesn't have a problem with James not killing Beckett because it was Elizabeth that started his path, it was Elizabeth that he needed to save. Firesignwriter puts it so much better. James had fallen so, so far. And it was his honor that he needed to redeem for himself. As Teague put it when speaking to Jack, its not how long you live but how well you can live with yourself. James gets his own forgiveness with his act for Elizabeth and that is what matters most in the end. It is how you can die without being afraid. I like James's death. I wish there had been more of him because I love Norrington and I love Jack Dav, but it was good that we didn't have to watch him debase himself more than we did. I love the look that passed between Norrington and Swann when Norrington got his sword back. They knew that things were bad but they still felt helpless. Good people often do.
And Bootstrap. There is a consensus that Bootstrap didn't deserve Will, that he was weak and stupid and beneath Will. Perhaps he was. But the thing his, most of us don't deserve to be rescued when we have managed to dig ourselves a hole as deep as Bootstrap had done. Hopefully someone will love us enough to want to do it anyway. Will's whole mission from the day he stepped on that ill fated merchant ship was to find his father. In the act of finding and saving his father he found himself. It was what made him who he was . It was his journey.
I love Barbossa in this story. It is giving me a soft spot that I didn't have for him in the first. I have always loved Rush's portrayal of him but Barbosa always kind of creeped me out. I love how Barbosa and Jack fought like an old married couple. There are stories to be told with that one.
I love the scene at the Kraken. Again, the conversation with Jack and Barbosa hints of an intimate backstory between them.
There is more but I need to run.
This movie lights my little fan girl heart on fire. right up to the bit where Jack hoists his colors and sails off in the little Dingy.

Date: 2007-05-27 12:42 pm (UTC)I am still pondering what Elizabeth's journey was. Hers was started by Will however and therefore, in the end she had to pick Will over other choices or, end up on a different journey. I think this is why I don't have a hard time with the coda thing, the idea of her remaining true to him in his long abscences. Faithfulness involves more than just abstinence.
